Research and understanding mattes and matte painting

A matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows film-makers to create the illusion of an environment that doesn't exist in real life or would be either to expensive to use, or impossible to build or visit etc.
The creation of matte painting go back as far as 1905. It used to only be for films although nowadays it is also used for a style of art by artists. It used to be created by hand, painting images or glass is now done on tablets and also computers.
Matte painting is a painted representation of a landscape, set, or distant location that allows film-makers to create an illusion of an environment that doesn't exist. Matte painters and film technicians have used various techniques to combine a matte - painted image with live - action footage. At its best, depending on the skill levels of the artists and technicians, the effect is "seamless" and creates environments that would otherwise be impossible in film.
This is a clip of a matte painting used in the film 'Meet Joe Black', It shows what the matte painting is, and also what the original background was and what it was changed to in the filming, to make sure that it suits the rest of the film environment. I believe this is convincing for they have made it fit perfectly in the place and also it matches the ground and costume and buildings (everything) perfectly.
